Why?

Despite the zombies and the time looping (both things that, as far as I know, aren’t real), Forever War is a deeply personal story for me.

I (Shana) commissioned into the US Air Force when I graduated from college (the first time) in May 2001; by October 2001, we were officially fighting a war in Afghanistan. In August 2021—the same month I retired—the United States pulled out of Afghanistan and let the country fall to the Taliban again.

The experience of spending twenty years fighting a losing war had a profound impact on my outlook on life. My goal for Forever War is to give a voice to other service members who also have conflicted feelings about their time in the military, who either don’t have the opportunity to share or are hesitant to share for fear of being labeled ungrateful or unpatriotic. I love horror and felt the genre was the perfect way to tell the story. It’s all in the subtext!
